Dutch industrial designer Marcel Wanders let it be known that he was interested in working with a cosmetics company at the same time that MAC Cosmetics' Cosmetics' creative director James Gager was looking for a designer to collaborate with.

The MAC executive is a longtime Wanders fan. "I was, quite frankly, just interested in meeting the man behind a lot of great design -- some pieces of which I own -- even if nothing came of it," he tells StyleList. However, Gager says, "It ended up being a great meeting."

The resulting collaboration, MAC & Marcel Wanders, is an amazing capsule collection of MAC luxe cosmetics packaged in highly stylized tubes, compacts, and clutches designed by Wanders.

"When we started working on the project, I realized that I like to work with my personal heritage, a little bit of old and a little bit of new," Wanders told StyleList at a Nov. 3 dinner in his honor at Scarpetta in New York City's Meatpacking District. "There's nothing that goes old faster than the new."

The packaging was inspired by the works of Vermeer, specifically the painting "The Girl With a Pearl Earring."

"We wanted to make these objects the objects of the painter. Vermeer uses brushes and he paints the girl, like she paints herself," said Wanders. "I was inspired by the idea that this was the toolbox of the painter."

He also aspired to assign value to the packaging itself. "I like the idea that this is a tool that becomes a jewel," he said. "Functional is easy. To make something valuable is something else."

This limited-edition, 14-piece collection will be available for only four weeks starting Nov. 24 in the United States and in December internationally.
