Alexander McQueen Exhibition at the MET

The Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced it is to stage an exhibition to honour the late Alexander McQueen.

Running from 4 May to 31 July 2011, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty will document two decades of the celebrated designer’s work from his graduate collection from Central St Martin’s to his final collection, shown in March this year, just weeks after his death.

In addition to showcasing pieces from both the Alexander McQueen and Givenchy archives, the exhibition will also feature items from the personal collections of the designer’s friends and supporters including Daphne Guinness and the late Isabella Blow – famed for buying out McQueen’s entire graduate collection.

The exhibition, which will be arranged thematically with categories spanning The Savage Mind to Romantic Gothic, will be launched at the annual Costume Institute Benefit Gala on 2 May.

Said the MET’s Andrew Bolton: “McQueen had such a singular voice and he was a remarkable technician. He really was one of the most provocative voices of the past 30 years in fashion. His catwalk presentations were outstanding and spans both art and fashion”. He continued, “We want to get across two elements - the spectacle of the runway presentations and the beauty of his craftsmanship."

And with Sam Gainsbury and Joseph Bennett - oft-times producers for McQueen‘s catwalk shows - on board as creative consultants, there is no-one better placed to realise those dual intentions and bring the production to life.
